What are the Compensatory picks in NFL Draft? Explained

NFL Draft 2026: What is a compensatory pick? Why some teams get extra NFL draft picks, how it determines.

Sometimes, it can pay not to pay.

In addition to the seven draft picks each NFL team starts with, there will be 35 additional, compensatory picks in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Each spring, the NFL evaluates the free agent activity of every team from the previous year. If a team lost more compensatory free agents (CFAs) than it signed, it may receive extra picks at the end of Rounds 3 through 7. The round in which a pick is awarded depends on the value of the player lost — the better the player, the higher the round.

The value of a lost player is calculated based on three factors: his salary on his new team, playing time (snaps), and any awards earned such as Pro Bowl or All-Pro selections.

What is a compensatory pick?

A compensatory pick is a bonus draft selection awarded by the NFL to teams that lose more or better free agents than they gain in a given offseason. It is a way of compensating teams for losing valuable players to other clubs.

How the NFL determines Compensatory Picks

The exact formula for calculating compensatory picks is one of the NFL’s most closely guarded secrets. However, what is known is that the league assesses multiple factors:
  • Contract Value: The bigger the contract a lost free agent signs, the more valuable the compensatory pick could be.
  • Playing Time: If the departed player logs significant snaps for their new team, it increases the likelihood of their former team receiving a higher pick.
  • Performance and Awards: Individual accolades such as Pro Bowl selections, All-Pro nods, and statistical achievements influence the compensatory formula.
However, a team's free agency activity also plays a role in determining these picks. If a team signs as many high-profile free agents as it loses, it may receive fewer or no compensatory picks at all. This balancing act forces teams to carefully navigate free agency, often prioritizing long-term sustainability over short-term fixes.
