The NHL released the initial rosters for the 2024 NHL All-Star Game after the initial eight-man rosters were unveiled on Jan. 4 thanks to a change in format to the selection process.

What is the format for the NHL All-Star Game?

Two of the teams will play 20 minutes of 3-on-3 hockey, followed by the other two teams. The teams will change sides and goalies at the 10-minute mark. Tie games will be decided by shootouts. The winners of the semifinals will face off for the championship. The winning team will split $1 million.

Who are the four coaches for the NHL All-Star Game ?

The NHL named Peter Laviolette (Rangers), Jim Montgomery (Bruins), Rick Bowness (Jets) and Rick Tocchet (Canucks) as All-Star Game coaches. 

Those four were leading their respective divisions in winning percentage at the halfway point of the season. Laviolette is coaching for the fourth time, Montgomery and Tocchet their second and Bowness is making his All-Star coaching debut.

2024 NHL All-Star Game Format, How it works

The 2024 NHL All-Star Game will be a little different in terms of format.

Since 2016, the league has played the All-Star Game with four teams based on the league's four divisions in a three-on-three, single-elimination tournament. For example, the Atlantic Division won the 2023 ASG and the Metropolitan Division won the 2022 event.

For the 2024 All-Star Game, the league announced the return of the player draft, which eliminates divisions and will allow players from the Eastern and Western Conferences to play on the same team.

Celebrities will be paired with captains and four teams of 11 players (nine skaters, two goalies) will be selected.

The NHL previously utilized a player draft for a two-team format in 2011, 2012 and 2015.

The 2024 format will remain a three-on-three, single-elimination tournament.

How does the NHL All-Star fan vote work?

Fans can vote on NHL.com, the NHL app or on X, formerly Twitter. Here are the eligibility guidelines. Each fan post must include the complete hashtag “ #NHLAllStarVote ” and a player’s full name or X handle or tag the player’s X handle. Only referencing a last name will not count.

What is the format for the skills competition, Prize Money?

Instead of everyone competing, 12 skaters will take part in four of six events: fastest skater, hardest shot, stickhandling, one-timers, passing challenge and accuracy shooting. Five points are awarded to the winner of each event down to zero for whoever finishes sixth.

The top eight skaters will take part in a shootout challenge and can choose the goalie they face. After that event, the top remaining six will take part in an obstacle course, worth twice the number of points. The skater with the most points at the end of the night will receive $1 million.

 The National Hockey League (NHL) today announced that multi-platinum, award-winning, rock band The Glorious Sons and viral multi-instrumentalist TALK will performances during the NHL All-Star Skills on Friday, Feb. 2, 2024, at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto during the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend. 

The entertainment by The Glorious Sons and TALK will be televised as part of the broadcasts on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada and on ESPN and ESPN+ in the United States.

Canadian singer Chxrry22 and singer, songwriter and entertainer Dinah Jane of the award-winning multi-platinum pop group Fifth Harmony will perform the Canadian and U.S. national anthems, respectively, to open the NHL ® All-Star Skills on Friday night.
