Penn State Volleyball Reclaims NCAA Crown in Historic, Emotional Win

The Penn State Nittany Lions are once again atop the college volleyball world. On December 22, 2024, they defeated the Louisville Cardinals in four sets (25-23, 32-34, 25-20, 25-17) to win the program's eighth NCAA national championship, ending a ten-year title drought.

The victory was historic and deeply personal. Head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley became the first woman head coach to win the NCAA volleyball championship in tournament history. Her triumph came while courageously battling breast cancer, a diagnosis she received in the fall. "I'm inspired by the young kids that are sick," she said post-match. "If I can be an inspiration, then I take that."

Playing before a record championship crowd of 21,860 at Louisville's KFC Yum! Center, Penn State overcame a fierce challenge. After narrowly winning the first set, they lost an epic second set 34-32, during which Louisville saved ten set points. However, the Nittany Lions dominated the final two sets, proving too much for a Cardinals squad missing senior star Anna DeBeer due to an ankle injury.

The win not only revived a dynasty but also marked a significant milestone for women in coaching. As Louisville coach Dani Busboom Kelly noted, "It's a big deal for this sport... more women will be in this position in the future." For Penn State, it was a return to glory, cemented by resilience, talent, and an inspirational leader.
