Broncos overpower RedHawks to secure the MAC Championship

Broncos overpower RedHawks to secure the MAC Championship.

Western Michigan didn’t just beat Miami (OH) for the MAC title — the Broncos rewrote the storyline that had haunted them all season. The RedHawks were the only team to knock WMU off in conference play, stealing a game the Broncos once led deep into the fourth quarter. That loss lingered, and when both teams returned to Ford Field with a trophy on the line, Western Michigan made sure there would be no repeat.

From the opening whistle, the Broncos played with the urgency of a team refusing to let history rhyme. Jalen Buckley provided the instant spark. On just the second play of the game, he slipped through a crease, turned upfield, and thundered 67 yards for a touchdown. It wasn’t just an early score — it was a statement that WMU wouldn’t be easing into this championship.

Buckley wasn’t done rewriting the tone. When the second half opened, he touched the ball for the first time since the break and ripped off a 64-yard touchdown, almost identical in its violence and clarity: Western Michigan was dictating everything. By the end of the night, Buckley had built a performance worthy of any championship stage — 19 carries, 193 yards, two touchdowns, and the kind of command that forces a defense to brace for every snap.

The Broncos didn’t lean solely on him, though. Their entire rushing attack surged, finishing with 288 yards on the ground and controlling tempo from start to finish. The offensive line kept the push steady, the play calling stayed aggressive, and Miami never found the defensive rhythm that helped them steal the earlier matchup.

Western Michigan’s defense held its own part of the bargain. Where the RedHawks had mounted a late comeback in the regular season meeting, this time every spark was smothered early. The Broncos tackled with purpose, controlled the line of scrimmage, and forced Miami into uncomfortable situations long before desperation time. WMU played like a team that had memorized the script of the first game and was determined to flip every line.

With the win, Western Michigan climbs to 9–4 and heads into bowl season with an identity fully realized: physical, explosive, and opportunistic. Their postseason destination is still uncertain, but the MAC’s top bowl affiliations— the Arizona Bowl, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, and Detroit’s GameAbove Sports Bowl — all sit on the table.

Wherever they land, the Broncos won’t be arriving quietly. They’ve spent a season climbing out of the long shadow of that early loss, and in the biggest game of their year, they didn’t just avenge it — they transformed it into fuel. The MAC championship wasn’t just a trophy for Western Michigan. It was a reset, a vindication, and a statement that the Broncos can finish what they start.
