Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter became immortalized in bronze on Saturday, winning the Heisman Trophy over Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Miami quarterback Cam Ward.

With that, Hunter became the first receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since Alabama's DeVonta Smith in 2020, the first defensive back and two-way player to win since Michigan's Charles Woodson in 1997 and the first Colorado player to win since running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994.

It is awarded by the Heisman Trust, successors of the awards from the Downtown Athletic Club at an annual ceremony at the Times Square, Manhattan.

The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the Heisman Trophy Nominees-candidates 79th times to unique Winners from its inception in 1935.

. The first Heisman Trophy award winner is by Jay Berwanger (Chicago) in 1935 & in 1936 a Great player John Heisman died, it was renamed to his Honor, it was known as Heisman Trophy till now.

Archie Griffin (Ohio) is the only player to receive the award twice, winning in 1974-75..

When was the Heisman Trophy first awarded?


First,  It was awarded by New York City’s Downtown Athletic Club beginning in 1935 to honor the top college football player east of the Mississippi River. The University of Chicago’s Jay Berwanger won the inaugural award.


Downtown Athletic Club director John Heisman died the following year, and the trophy was renamed in his honor. Larry Kelley of Yale became the first player to win the Heisman Trophy under the new name.

Which player has won the most Heisman Trophies?

Archie Griffin made Heisman history in 1975.

The Ohio State running back was coming off a Heisman-winning season in 1974 and went on to earn the honor once again in his senior campaign. He became the first player to win two Heismans and remains the only player to pull off the feat.


Which school has the most Heisman Trophy winners?

Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma are tied as the schools with the most Heisman Trophies, taking home seven apiece. USC has six and would be in a four-way tie with those other schools if not for the NCAA rescinding Reggie Bush’s 2005 win due to violations.

Alabama getting stronge, No player from the school had taken home the award until 2009, and it has since accumulated four.

Further down the list, Army, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Michigan and Nebraska have each won the Heisman Trophy three times.

Most wins by player:   2 (Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner)

Most wins by position:   44 (Running Back/Halfback)
