Iga Swiatek wins 2023 French Open final for 3rd trophy, 4th Slam

Roland Garros 2023: Iga Swiatek beats Karolina Muchova in the French Open final for her 3rd trophy in Paris, 4th Slam

Iga Swiatek won the French Open final on Saturday after defeating Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 after taking a commanding lead early on. This was Swiatek's third victory at Roland Garros and fourth Grand Slam victory.

In barely 10 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier, the No. 1-ranked Swiatek sprinted to a 3-0 lead, winning 12 of the first 15 points. She then led 3-0 in the second set before Muchova added some intrigue.

Muchova won five of six games to tie the match at one set apiece while Swiatek appeared off-balance and sought instruction from her coach in between points. Muchova advanced 2-0 in the decisive set, maintaining her momentum.

At that point, Swiatek resumed playing her typical style of crisp, clean tennis, darting across the red clay with excellent defence and profiting from Muchova's constant errors. In the third set, Swiatek twice fell behind by a break before winning the final three games.

Along with her victory here in 2020 and her success at the U.S. Open in September of last year, the 22-year-old Polish player has now won the French Open twice in a row.

Since Serena Williams reached that milestone at the 2002 U.S. Open when she was 20 years old, Swiatek is now the youngest woman to have won four Grand Slam championships.

Along with Monica Seles and Naomi Osaka, Swiatek is just the third woman in the professional era to start 4-0 in a major final.

Muchova, who is ranked 43rd, was participating in a championship match at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
