The "Riders Up" call has been given. "New York, New York" has been sung. And the 157th running of the Belmont Stakes is now in the books.

Sovereignty became the first thoroughbred to win two of the three Triple Crown races since 2018 by capturing the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.

Since Justify became the 13th Triple Crown winner in 2018, the 26 Triple Crown races had produced 26 different winners. But Sovereignty followed his victory in the Kentucky Derby on May 3 by winning the Belmont Stakes, too.

And the colt won the Belmont the same way that he won the Kentucky Derby – by running past Journalism in the stretch.

After beating the betting favorite in the Kentucky Derby, Sovereignty skipped the Preakness Stakes, which Journalism then won on May 17.

Sovereignty became the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby, purposefully miss the Preakness Stakes and win the Belmont Stakes.
