How an Olympic City Is Chosen for Summer & Winter Games.



The Winter and Summer Olympics are governed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This multinational organization chooses the host cities.

Nine years prior to the Olympic games, Host cities can start contacting the IOC to start the process. Each delegation must accomplish a set of objectives over the next three years to show that they have (or will have) the facilities and funding necessary to host an effective Olympics.



The IOC's member states cast ballots for the finalist at the conclusion of the three-year period. However, not all cities that are interested in hosting the games advance this far in the competition.


For instance, the IOC eliminated two of the five cities vying to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, Doha, Qatar, and Baku, Azerbaijan, midway through the selection process. Only Istanbul, Madrid, and Paris advanced; Paris took first place.

London is the only city to host the Summer Games three times: 1908, 1948 and 2012. In 2024, Paris will host the summer Olympics for the third time, and in 2028 LA will host the Games for the third time too.

The 2028 Games will also be the fifth time the Games have been hosted in the USA, though in three different cities.

  • The first modern Summer Olympics in Athens in 1896 took place just four years after Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin proposed them. The event featured only about 250 athletes from 13 nations competing in nine sports.
