Morocco are reached into the quarter-finals for the first time ever, their fewest in a first half of a World Cup game since at least 1966 - as they were eventually dumped out.



Spain's Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler, and Sergio Busquets all missed spot-kicks, with Sarabia hitting the post and Yassine Bounou of Morocco saving the other two.

Both teams draw the match 0-0 in regulation 90 mints along with and extra time 120+ mints..



The biggest shock of the competition has been Morocco, who will next play either Portugal or Switzerland.

Before halftime, Morocco had its best opportunity of the game when West Ham center-back Nayef Aguerd misdirected a close-range header.

After a dull second half, Morocco's substitute Walid Cheddira was denied one-on-one in extra time by Unai Simon, and in the waning seconds, Pablo Sarabia's volley narrowly missed the post.

After Bono saved the penalty kicks from Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets and Sarabia twice hit the post with Spain's first attempt, Achraf Hakimi calmly chipped the winning penalty down the middle to send Morocco through.

Morocco are into the quarter-finals for the first time ever. Only the fourth African team to reach that stage after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.

Morocco is also the only team from outside Europe or South America to make it to the last eight. The team made the round of 16 once before, at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Spain was eliminated by the host nation Russia in a World Cup penalty shootout in 2018 as well as by Italy in the European Championship semifinals of the previous year.
