• Dominik Livakovic was the hero again as Croatia shocked Five-time world champions Brazil in a penalty shootout to book their place in the World Cup semi-final after a dramatic 1-1 draw over Favourits Yellow's for second straight tournament.

2018 finalists Croatia were forced to edge out a penalty shootout win over Japan, after a marathon 1-1 draw in Al Wakrah, as Brazil hammered South Korea 4-1 in their first knockout game.



Like many other games, the first half was a cagey, scrappy affair with few chances created by either side.

Thanks to a magical moment from forward Neymar, who wrote himself into the history books by tying Brazilian great Pele's all-time goalscoring record of 77, Brazil appeared to be labouring to an extra-time victory over stubborn rival.



Croatia strategically probed throughout, limiting and stifling Brazil's usual rhythm before falling victim to Neymar's brilliance in the first period of extra time—it was almost a checkmate.

A cruel Marquinhos deflection that caught Alisson off guard allowed Bruno-Petkovic to latch onto Mislav-cross Orsic's and tie the score in the 117th minute with Croatia's lone shot on goal, sending the match to penalties.



In the shootout Livakovic saved Rodrygo's spot-kick, Marquinhos and Rodrygo then both missed their subsequent penalty kicks in the shootout, while Croatia miraculously converted all four of their attempts to advance to the tournament's semifinals.

Croatia will compete for a spot in the championship against either Argentina or the Netherlands, who play later on Friday night.
