College football’s top individual honor will be presented Saturday, Dec. 13.
One day before the ceremony in New York City, several major postseason awards were announced Friday, Dec. 12, during The Home Depot College Football Awards show. The event recognized some of the nation’s top players, teams, and coaches.
Multiple Heisman Trophy finalists were in contention for awards presented by the National College Football Awards Association, including Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin, and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.
Mendoza, widely viewed as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, captured the Maxwell Award, which is given annually to the nation’s most outstanding player. He also earned the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, recognizing the top quarterback in college football.
Ohio State safety Caleb Downs also added hardware, winning the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. Downs wrapped up the regular season with 60 tackles, two interceptions, a pass breakup, and a sack.
Additional honors presented during the ceremony included the Chuck Bednarik Award, Biletnikoff Award, Lou Groza Award, Ray Guy Award, Outland Trophy, Jim Thorpe Award, and Doak Walker Award.
