  • Australian Stephanie Gilmore and Brazilian Filipe Toledo both outclassed Olympic champions to crowns the 2022 World Surf League (WSL) titles at Lower Trestles in California.



World Surf League: WSL 2022:  Australia's Gilmore dethroned Hawaiian Carissa Moore to become the first woman to win the Record WSL Championship Tour title Eighth times, while Brazilian Toledo earns his maiden WSL crown after beating fellow Italo Ferreira.

  • At the Rip Curl WSL Finals in California, Gilmore was in fifth place going into the WSL finals day, but she won five straight heats to secure a berth in the championship match against Carissa Moore.

The Australian Gilmore defeated the five-time WSL champion by a score of two to nil to enter the record books, After her most recent victory,



Gilmore swept Moore in the best of three final by scores of 15.00-10.90 and 15.23-11.97.

Gilmore won her eighth WSL world championships, a women's record for most WSL titles at the age of 34 years old and four years after her last title in 2018.




Australian came in as the No. 5 seed and impressively defeated Brisa Hennessy, the No. 4 player in the world, No. 3 Tatiana Weston-Webb, and No. 2 Johanne Defay to advance to the championship match.



2022 WSL Finals: Filipe Toledo beats Italo Ferreira to Wins the maiden WSL title at Lower Trestles, Calif.




  • Toledo defeated Ferreira to win the men's WSL global title, making him the sixth Brazilian to accomplish it in the previous nine years.

Starting out as the fourth seed, Ferreira upset Olympic silver medalist Kanoa Igarashi of Japan 13.37 to 11.83 before defeating Australia's Ethan Ewing 13.10 to 11.83 to advance to the final.



The 2019 WSL champion then defeated fellow Australian Jack Robinson, 16.10 to 13.30, to set up an all-Brazilian final.

Toledo triumphed 16.50 to 14.93 in the second heat after winning the first 15.13 to 14.97.
