A disastrous play call in which the Kansas City Chiefs got a little too creative gave the Pittsburgh Steelers their only first-half touchdown, and it simultaneously ignited Patrick Mahomes and Co. on a barrage that saw them score five times in just over 11 minutes.


And with that, the Chiefs cruised through their playoff opener 42-21and took another step toward their quest for their third Super Bowl appearance in as many years.

Steelers got a early lead 7-0 due to defensive touchdowns, Mahomes responded by throwing five touchdown passes in 10:31 of game time, taking a 7-0 Steelers lead and turning it into a 35-7 Chiefs advantage. 



  • Byron Pringle rose to the occasion, catching five passes for 37 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Jerick McKinnon a valuable asset in the passing game, catching six passes for 81 yards.
  • Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill combined for 10 catches, 165 yards and two scores.
  • Offensive lineman Nick Allegretti got involved, catching a touchdown pass on a creative goal-line play call. 


  • Ben Roethlisberger capped what is expected to be his final season with another ugly and occasionally successful game. 

  • Diontae Johnson continued to struggle with drops, and Najee Harris fumbled for the first time in his young NFL career.



Kansas City largely dominated Pittsburgh after a slow start, showing the explosive tendencies that have helped the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl in each of the last two seasons.

Travis Kelce became the first player in NFL history to throw a touchdown, catch a touchdown and break 100 receiving yards in a single playoff game.

 Patrick Mahomes completed 23 of 26 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns on attempts of fewer than 10 air yards.
