The $875 million facility is the newest and most expensive stadium in college football, seating 35,000 fans with a focus on premium sightlines, accessibility, and a compact, intense atmosphere.

Located near the banks of Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois, the new Ryan Field replaces the previous venue that held 47,000 fans. Despite the reduced capacity, the stadium occupies a larger footprint and prioritizes proximity to the field.

Pat Ryan Jr., CEO of Ryan Sports Development and leader of the project’s design and development, highlighted the stadium’s proximity: the “worst” seat is only about 136 feet from the sideline—roughly one-and-a-half basketball courts from the end zone.“We really do believe this will be the best stadium to watch a football game or stadium-concert in America,” Ryan said. “Our sight lines are even better than a lot of basketball arenas that are half the capacity.”

The Wildcat Wall Student Section

A standout element is the “Wildcat Wall,” a standing-only student section that places approximately 2,000 students directly above one end zone. With Northwestern’s relatively small undergraduate population of about 8,000, the design aims to create a concentrated, high-intensity home-field advantage.“By putting 2,000 students right on top of the end zone, we amplify the power of our student section,” Ryan explained. “Not amplify with sound; you amplify it with the intensity of that many people in that tight of space.”
