Canada’s oldest and most prestigious Thoroughbred race, and the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, takes place on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.
167th edition of The King's Plate is restricted to three-year-olds foaled in Canada and contested at 1¼ miles on the Tapeta all-weather surface. The guaranteed purse is $1 million.
Gates open around 11:30 a.m. ET; the race card’s first post is approximately 12:30 p.m. ET (exact post time for the Plate itself is typically mid-to-late afternoon and will be confirmed closer to the day).
The post-position draw is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11 (morning), so individual post positions are not yet available.

The second jewel, the Prince of Wales Stakes 2026, moves to Fort Erie Race Track on Monday, September 7, 2026 (Labour Day).
The 91st running is run at 1 3/16 miles on dirt for Canadian-foaled three-year-olds. The purse is $400,000 (listed as up to $500,000 including Ontario-bred incentives in some announcements).
Exact post time and post positions will be set closer to the race (draw historically occurs a few days prior). First post for Fort Erie cards is typically in the mid-to-late afternoon.

Third Leg: Breeders’ Stakes
The final jewel returns to Woodbine on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
It is contested at 1½ miles on the turf (E.P. Taylor Turf Course) for Canadian-foaled three-year-olds. The guaranteed purse is $400,000 (some later reports reference enhancements up to $500,000 with Ontario-bred bonuses).

This is the longest of the three races and completes the unique three-surface challenge (Tapeta → dirt → turf). A winner of all three legs becomes a Canadian Triple Crown champion—an extremely rare achievement.
Notes across the series: All three races are open to colts, geldings, and fillies (fillies receive a weight allowance in some cases). Only Canadian-foaled three-year-olds are eligible. Post positions, exact post times for the feature races, and final fields are confirmed closer to each event (King’s Plate draw is imminent as of early August 2026).

The Canadian Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing is a series of three races restricted to three-year-old horses foaled in Canada. It was officially established in 1959.
The distances match the American Triple Crown (1¼ miles, 1 3/16 miles, and 1½ miles). Unlike many European classics, the series is open to geldings as well as colts and fillies.
Twelve horses are officially recognized as Canadian Triple Crown winners. Seven won after the series was formally created in 1959.
In 2014, five earlier winners (who swept the three races before the official series existed) were grandfathered in by Woodbine Entertainment and the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
