Amazon Prime Video to Stream Wednesday NHL Games and Playoff Series in Canada Under Major Rogers Deal

TORONTO — Amazon’s Prime Video will become the exclusive home for Wednesday night national NHL regular-season games in Canada starting next season, as part of a new 12-year licensing agreement with Rogers Communications Inc.The landmark deal gives Prime Video significant national hockey rights in both English and French, expanding its growing footprint in Canadian live sports.

At least 26 national regular-season games on Wednesday nights

Select Stanley Cup playoff series, including two first-round series and one second-round series each year

Rogers-owned Sportsnet will continue to air the majority of national NHL broadcasts.

Playoff Broadcasting Format

Rogers will use a draft-style selection process for playoff coverage:Prime Video gets the 4th and 5th picks among the eight first-round series

Prime Video gets the 3rd pick among the four second-round matchups

End of an Era for Traditional NHL Broadcasts

The deal comes after Rogers and the CBC announced they will not renew their agreement, ending the iconic “Hockey Night in Canada” on the public broadcaster after the 2025-26 season. Citytv will also stop carrying national NHL games, meaning there will no longer be national NHL broadcasts on free-to-air television in Canada.

Background on Rogers-NHL Partnership

Rogers first acquired Canadian national NHL rights in 2013 with a 12-year, $5.2 billion deal. The company has now extended its dominance through 2038. Prime Video previously carried Monday night games in Canada over the past two seasons.

Industry Shift Toward Streaming

Longtime Canadian sportscaster and producer John Shannon described the move as an “inevitability,” citing similar shifts in the CFL (moving Saturday games to DAZN in 2027) and MLS (partnering with Apple TV).“The world has changed,” Shannon said. “How we watch conventional television, through specialty channels, through streamers — it’s been coming.”

What This Means for Fans?

Canadian hockey fans with Amazon Prime will get convenient access to a full night of national NHL action every Wednesday, plus additional high-stakes playoff games, all streamed without extra cost.
