Stanford Claims 2026 NCAA Women's Golf Championship: Greatest Team of All Time?
No. 1 Stanford defeated No. 2 USC 4-1 on Wednesday at Omni La Costa to win the 2026 NCAA Women's Golf Championship. The victory marks the Cardinal’s third national title in five years and fourth in program history — further strengthening their claim as the greatest dynasty in women’s college golf. The match was never close. Stanford jumped out early and clinched the win on the 15th green. Paula Martin Sampedro took the first point with a 3 & 2 victory over Catherine Park, Meja Ortengren followed with a dominant 6 & 5 win, and senior Megha Ganne sealed the championship with a 4 & 3 victory.
Coach Calls This Stanford Team the Greatest Ever
Head coach Anne Walker didn’t hesitate when asked about this year’s group:
“They’re going to live on in Stanford golf as the greatest of all-time, and I feel like there’s a strong possibility that it’s the greatest team I ever coached.”
This championship came after a painful loss to Northwestern in last year’s final. That defeat motivated the team, especially juniors Paula Martin Sampedro and Andrea Revuelta, who called a players-only meeting after the Augusta National Women’s Amateur to demand better performance in match play.Their message was simple: Stanford was too good to settle for anything less than excellence. The players focused on the little things and committed to being “brilliant at the basics.” The result was a dominant postseason run with no match play losses.
Unprecedented Dominance
Stanford has now won six straight NCAA Stroke Play titles — a feat no men’s or women’s team has ever achieved. The Cardinal also cruised through the ACC Championship and NCAA Regional, finishing first in stroke play for the sixth consecutive year. All five players who competed in last year’s championship match returned this season. Seniors Megha Ganne and Kelly Xu depart with two national titles each after strong careers. In one of the most competitive eras in women’s college golf, Stanford remains clearly ahead of the field. Their combination of talent, discipline, player leadership, and culture has produced sustained success that few programs can match. The 2026 championship is a full-circle moment for a team that turned disappointment into dominance — and may just be the best Stanford women’s golf team ever assembled.
