Lionel Messi Hamstring Injury: Inter Miami Star Subbed Off Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Lionel Messi suffered an apparent injury during Inter Miami’s match against Philadelphia Union on Sunday night. While taking a free kick, Messi immediately grabbed the back of his leg (hamstring area) and requested a substitution. He was replaced in the 73rd minute. He walked off the field without a significant limp.

Current Status:

Inter Miami will assess the injury in the coming hours/days.

Coach Guillermo Hoyos described Messi as “fatigued” but said the club still needs more information on the exact injury.

The match was Inter Miami’s final game before the MLS break for the 2026 World Cup.

World Cup Context:

Argentina’s first group stage match is scheduled for June 16, 2026 (vs Algeria in Kansas City).

This gives Messi roughly 3 weeks to recover.

Messi, who turns 39 in June, is expected to lead Argentina in what is widely believed to be his final World Cup.

No official diagnosis has been released yet. Updates from Inter Miami and the Argentina national team are expected soon.
