Ed Chynoweth Cup Winners, Full List of Past WHL Champions Since 1966

The WHL was founded in 1966 as an interprovincial league in western Canada. It faced initial opposition from the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association but was later recognized as a Major Junior league alongside the OHL and QMJHL, forming the Canadian Hockey League (CHL).The trophy was originally called the President's Cup. It was renamed the Ed Chynoweth Cup in 2007 to honour Ed Chynoweth, a long-time WHL and CHL president who played a key role in shaping modern Canadian junior hockey.

He passed away in 2008 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame that same year.Notable dynasties include the New Westminster Bruins (4 straight titles, 1975–78) and the Kamloops Blazers (dominant in the early 1990s). The Medicine Hat Tigers won their sixth title in the 2024–25 season, defeating the Spokane Chiefs 4–1 in the championship series (clinched with a 4-2 win in Game 5). They advanced to the 2025 Memorial Cup but lost in the final.
