USA beat Canada in WBC quarterfinals Highlights, As It Happened

Team USA beat Canada in WBC Quarters, Setup Semis vs Domino's, highlights, As It Happened.

The United States will meet Canada in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals on March 14, with the game time and broadcast slot still to be confirmed. The U.S. avoided elimination after a loss to Italy and is eyeing its second WBC title.
OK, we can all breathe a little easier now.

After a stunning defeat at the hands of Italy on Tuesday, the United States was in jeopardy of being eliminated ahead of the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals. Coming into the tournament, the USA was heavy favorites, meaning a failure of this magnitude would be downright embarrassing.

The U.S. managed to avoid such a tragedy, though, thanks to the very team that beat it yesterday: Italy.

But pool play was the easy part. Now comes the contests where the U.S. proves whether or not the hype surrounding its team entering the tournament was worth it. The U.S. is looking for its second World Baseball Classic title.

USA vs Canada in WBC quarterfinals Live Updates....

FINAL SCORE:

*Top of the 9th: Witt Jr. 5-pitch walk.

USA: 5           *RHP M. Miller pitching the 9th.

CAN:  3           *LHP M. Wilkinson pitching got the 3 outs.

*Bottom of the 9th: 3-up 3-down for USA pitcher Mason Miller.

USA 5, Canada 3

Matt Wilkinson comes in during a critical inning for Canada.

Gets the first out against Alex Bregman, gets Roman Anthony down and then gets rid of the heavy-hitting Cal Raleigh with a struckout.

Not a bad time on the mound for a minor leaguer…

USA 5, Canada 0 — USA rallying in the sixth inning

The United States added to its lead with a rally in the sixth. Roman Anthony reached on an infield single, and Cal Raleigh followed with a walk to put two runners on base. Brice Turang then delivered a single to drive in a run, and Pete Crow-Armstrong followed with another RBI single.

Those back-to-back hits added two insurance runs for Team USA.

USA 3, Canada 0 — End of the 4th inning

Canada has made solid contact at times and has collected four hits, but Logan Webb has largely stayed in control on the mound for the United States. He has struck out four batters, issued no walks, and has also benefited from some solid defense behind him.

Webb has now thrown 54 pitches. For comparison, he threw 52 pitches last Friday against Brazil. He will likely go at least one more inning, after which his pitch count will be reassessed. The limit for this round is 80 pitches, though it’s unclear whether the Giants would be comfortable with Webb jumping from 52 pitches to around 80 in consecutive spring outings.

In the other quarterfinal,

the Dominican Republic handled Korea with ease, winning 10–0 by mercy rule in the seventh inning. Austin Wells sealed the victory with a three-run home run.

That was actually the only home run for the Dominican Republic in the game. Junior Caminero and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. both hit doubles, while Caminero and Manny Machado each recorded two-hit performances. Guerrero, Machado, and Caminero also scored two runs apiece.

Cristopher Sánchez delivered a strong outing on the mound, tossing five scoreless innings and striking out eight to earn the win.

With the victory, the Dominican Republic advances to face the winner of this game at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday night.

USA 3, Canada 0 — Top of the 3rd inning

The United States added two more runs after Alex Bregman hit a ground ball between third base and shortstop. Canada’s third baseman, Abraham Toro, made a diving stop but attempted a throw to first that sailed wide, allowing two runners to score.

Kyle Schwarber advanced to third on the play, while Bregman reached second. Roman Anthony is now coming up to bat for the U.S. Meanwhile, Canada is making a pitching change as Micah Ashman replaces starting pitcher Michael Soroka.

USA 1, Canada 0 — End of the 2nd inning

Neither team created much of a scoring opportunity in the second inning. Logan Webb has thrown 32 pitches for the United States, while Canada’s Michael Soroka sits at 31 pitches.

There is an 80-pitch limit in this round, though teams often manage their pitchers more cautiously. For instance, the Giants may prefer that Webb doesn’t push all the way to that limit.

USA leads Canada 1–0 in the middle of the first inning.

The United States opened the scoring with a small rally in the first. Bobby Witt Jr. started things off by drawing a walk and later advanced to third after a one-out double from Aaron Judge. Witt then crossed home plate on a groundout by Kyle Schwarber.

Canada managed to avoid further damage. Bryce Harper nearly added more runs, but his deep fly ball to straightaway center field was caught at the wall for the first out of the inning. Still, the U.S. has an early lead in this quarterfinal matchup as Logan Webb steps onto the mound.
