Mike Chematot and Kena Girma Claim Victory at 2026 Madrid Marathon

Kenya’s Mike Chematot and Ethiopia’s Kena Girma emerged as the winners of the 2026 Madrid Marathon on Sunday.

Chematot produced a strong performance to win the men’s race in 2:08:45, finishing 20 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Asefa Mengisa, who clocked 2:09:05 for second place. Dechasa Alemu completed the podium in third with a time of 2:09:10.

The men’s race saw a competitive field, with several athletes breaking the 2:10 and 2:11 barriers. Kenya’s Philemon Bett finished fourth in 2:10:02, while Gideon Chepkonga took fifth in 2:11:04.In the women’s race, Kena Girma of Ethiopia dominated to take the title in 2:25:59.

She finished well clear of her compatriot Amente Sorome Negash, who ran 2:27:42 for second place. Kenya’s Leonida Mosop secured third position with a time of 2:32:48.The women’s podium was rounded out by strong Ethiopian performances, with Zenebu Fikadu finishing fourth in 2:33:13 and Etenesh Lema fifth in 2:34:00.

Mike Chematot controlled the men’s race to win in 2:08:45, while Kena Girma delivered a dominant performance to take the women’s title in 2:25:59. Ethiopian runners filled most of the podium positions in both races, showing their continued strength in marathon running.

When is Madrid Marathon 2026? Start-times

The Zurich Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Madrid 2026 (Madrid Marathon) takes place on Sunday, April 26, 2026. 

Start Times:  10K: 8:00 AM  

Half Marathon & Marathon: 8:45 AM

Bib pickup will be available at the Runner’s Expo at IFEMA on Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25 (10:00 AM – 8:00 PM both days).


Where is Madrid Marathon 2026?

The race is held in Madrid, Spain. 

Start: Paseo de la Castellana (near Gregorio Marañón)  

Finish: Paseo de Recoletos


The course runs through central Madrid, passing many of the city’s historic landmarks.

Spectators: Best viewing spots include Puerta del Sol, the Royal Palace, and the finish line area at Paseo de Recoletos.


What is the Route, Map of Madrid Marathon 2026 Course?

The course is also regarded as one of the most scenic on the international calendar, starting on the iconic Paseo de la Castellana near Gregorio Marañón metro station and passing key landmarks such as Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the Cuatro Torres Business Area, Puerta del Sol, the Royal Palace, Casa de Campo, Madrid Río Park and the Prado Museum. The finish line awaits runners on Paseo de Recoletos, between Plaza de Cibeles and Plaza de Colón.

Madrid Marathon 2026 Road Closure

Major roads in central Madrid will be closed starting as early as 7:00 AM on Sunday, April 26, 2026.  Affected areas include: 

These are the planned road closures for the 2026 Madrid Marathon :

Paseo de Recoletos (central lanes in both directions) from 0 hours on April 25th until 19 hours on April 26th, 2026.

Paseo de la Castellana (central lanes in both directions), from Plaza de Colón to Plaza de Emilio Castelar, from 0 hours on April 25, 2026 until 17 hours on April 26, 2026.

Paseo de la Castellana (central lanes in both directions) and from Plaza de Emilio Castelar to Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz from 10:00 on April 25, 2026 until 12:30 on April 26, 2026.

Plaza de Cibeles from 5:30 a.m. on April 26, 2026.

Madrid Marathon 2026 Prize Money

The elite prize pool for the full marathon is approximately €21,850. 

1st Place (Male and Female): €7,000 each

Additional time bonuses are available for breaking course records or achieving fast times (e.g., sub-2:08:18 for men).
