Maltos Diaz Sends Alouettes Back to the Grey Cup

Jose Maltos Diaz drilled a 45-yard field goal on the final play to lift the Montreal Alouettes to a thrilling 19–16 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Saturday’s East Division Final.

With the victory, quarterback Davis Alexander improved to a perfect 13-0 as a CFL starter (regular season and playoffs). Montreal now heads to the Grey Cup on Nov. 16 in Winnipeg, where they’ll face either the B.C. Lions or Saskatchewan Roughriders, looking to defend their 2023 championship.

Diaz was clutch all night, hitting four field goals (including a 17-yarder and the game-winner) plus a convert. Tyler Snead scored Montreal’s lone touchdown.

Alexander, who’s battled hamstring issues this season, went 19-of-26 for 210 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while rushing for 64 yards. He led a calm, composed final drive despite visibly nursing his leg.

For Hamilton, Bo Levi Mitchell completed 29-of-36 passes for 269 yards, a touchdown to Shemar Bridges, and an interception. Marc Liegghio kicked three field goals and a convert.

It was a gritty defensive battle early — the teams traded field goals and penalties before Montreal took a 6–3 halftime lead. Both offences came alive in the second half, but in the end, Diaz’s leg decided it in front of a hostile, mostly black-and-gold crowd of 25,000 at Tim Hortons Field.

The Alouettes march on, one win away from back-to-back Grey Cup titles.
