Italy Wins Third Consecutive Davis Cup by Defeating Spain
Italy has once again asserted its dominance in the Davis Cup, claiming the title without the help of Jannik Sinner this year.
Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli starred for Italy, each winning their singles matches to secure a 2-0 lead over Spain in Sunday’s final — an unassailable advantage.
This marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title overall and a third consecutive victory. The last nation to achieve three straight wins was the United States, which captured five titles in a row from 1968-72.
Second-ranked Sinner, who helped Italy win the trophy in the past two years, chose to skip the tournament to prepare for next season. Lorenzo Musetti, ranked No. 8, also did not participate.
Italy proved unstoppable, winning all three of its matches 2-0 during the week at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, after beating Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals.
Spain was also without its star player, top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz.
In the final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-4, while Cobolli rallied to beat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, clinching the title. Cobolli celebrated by dropping his racket and being lifted into the air by his teammates.
Italy first captured the Davis Cup in 1976, then again in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time the team has won the trophy on home soil.
Spain, a six-time champion, was appearing in the title match for the first time since 2019.
