Davis Cup Finals: Italy reach final, Cobolli 32-pts tie-break against Belgium

Davis Cup Finals 2025: Italy beat reach final after Flavio Cobolli wins 32-point tie-break

Flavio Cobolli said that putting Italy into the Davis Cup final was “one of the best days of my life” after an incredible match where he saved seven match points to beat Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in a crazy 32-point tie-break.

The 23-year-old ripped off his shirt as the arena in Bologna exploded with joy. Cobolli finally won 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (17-15) after more than three hours of battle. The tie-break was one of the longest ever in the 125-year history of the Davis Cup.

With this victory, two-time defending champions Italy will face Spain or Germany in Sunday’s final.

Even in all the excitement, Cobolli went over to comfort Bergs, who was devastated and sitting on the Belgian bench with his head in his hands.

Speaking after the match, world number 22 Cobolli said:
“It’s hard to describe this match. We played for our countries, and we fought so much. In the end, I made my dream come true, and now we’re in the final. I played for all the fans, for my team, for my family, and for myself. This is one of the best days of my life.”

Italy’s captain, Filippo Volandri, added:“In my five years as captain, I’ve never seen anything like that. It was unbelievable. At the end it was 5% tactics and 95% heart. Flavio gave everything. I’m very proud. We have an amazing team—Matteo Berrettini even lost his voice cheering! But it’s not over. We celebrate tonight and then focus on the final.”

Berrettini had earlier given Italy the perfect start, dominating Raphael Collignon in straight sets in front of 10,000 excited fans.

With Cobolli’s win, Italy becomes the first team to reach three Davis Cup finals in a row since Australia in 2001.

Even without top stars Jannik Sinner (world No. 2) and Lorenzo Musetti (world No. 8), Italy will now try to win a third straight Davis Cup title, something no nation has done in 53 years—since the United States won four in a row in 1972.
