The Golden Eagle is the second-richest race in the country behind The Everest, with the best four-year-olds in Australia to compete for a whopping $10 million.
Now, there is additional prestige for all involved, with this year’s edition marking the first time it’s been run as a Group 1 race.
Skyhook Wins $10 Million Golden Eagle 2026 at Randwick
Skyhook won the $10 million Golden Eagle 2026 at Randwick on Saturday, giving jockey Chad Schofield another major victory just two weeks after winning the $20 million Everest aboard Tempted.
Schofield secured the ride on Skyhook after original jockey Kerrin McEvoy received a suspension. Trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, Skyhook started from barrier 14 and produced a brilliant performance to win the 1500m race.
In a thrilling finish, Skyhook ($11) narrowly defeated Decorum ($71) by a nose, setting a new track record. Beiwacht finished third, while race favourite Sheza Alibi ($1.50) struggled to find clear running room and finished 11th.
The victory made Schofield only the second jockey after Glen Boss in 2019 to win both The Everest and Golden Eagle in the same year, completing a remarkable two weeks in Australian horse racing.

2026 Golden Eagle Prize Money breakdown, how much winner earns, final finishing positions:
In 2022, the Golden Eagle total prize money was increased to an enormous $10 million.
A $5 million bonus will be offered to any horse that can win the Longines Golden Slipper, Golden Rose and the Golden Eagle.
Of the $10 million prize money, 10 percent will go towards charity. Each runner will nominate a charity that has been accredited with Racing NSW.
For example, as prizemoney for first is $5.2 million, the charity nominated by the owners of the winning horse would receive $525,000.
