Trey Lance tosses 2 touchdown passes, leading the Chargers over the Lions 34-7 in Hall of Fame game.
Trey Lance looked every bit like a former top draft pick as he led the Los Angeles Chargers to a dominant 34-7 win over the Detroit Lions in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night, officially kicking off the NFL preseason.
Lance, now on his third team in five years, threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns. It was a strong showing for the former No. 3 overall pick, and head coach Jim Harbaugh was impressed.
“Big night for Trey. Just played calm, cool, collected… threw the ball really well,” Harbaugh said.
Emotional Start
Before the game, there was a moment of silence for the victims of a shooting earlier in the week near NFL headquarters in New York. Four people were killed and one league employee was wounded. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell visited the injured staff member on Wednesday and said he's recovering.
Security was heightened at Tom Benson Stadium in Canton, Ohio, and around the Pro Football Hall of Fame village.
Lions Sit Starters, Struggle on Field
The Lions chose not to play key offensive names like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Jahmyr Gibbs. Head coach Dan Campbell also kept his top draft picks on the sideline. The result? Five turnovers and a sloppy performance.
“We turned it over five times and had zero takeaways. That’s hard,” Campbell admitted. “It’s hard to get a rhythm.”
Craig Reynolds managed to punch in Detroit’s only score with a 3-yard touchdown run, but the rest of the game was all Chargers.
Lance Delivers Early and Often
Lance helped set the tone after the Chargers recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff. On fourth-and-2, he dropped a perfect touch pass to Will Dissly for a 5-yard touchdown.
Later, following a 60-yard interception return by rookie Nikko Reed, Kimani Vidal scored from the 2-yard line to make it 14-0. Lance followed with another touchdown strike — this time a 15-yarder to KeAndre Lambert-Smith to close the half with a 21-7 lead.
Despite his limited experience — just five career NFL starts and only 19 games in college — Lance showed promise and composure.
“I feel good. Some good. Some bad. Left some plays out there,” Lance said.
Lance, who previously played for the 49ers and Cowboys, completed 13 of 20 passes before giving way to rookie DJ Uiagalelei.
“It’s been fun to be here,” Lance said. “It’s a joyful place.”
Lions' QBs Struggle
Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker are in a battle for Detroit’s backup quarterback role behind Jared Goff — but neither impressed. Allen threw two interceptions and went 9-for-14. Hooker also tossed a pick, adding to the Lions' rough night.
Chargers Dominate Mistake-Prone Lions
Detroit’s issues continued into the second half. Jakobie Keeney-James muffed a punt deep in Lions territory, setting up a Chargers field goal. Late in the fourth, Vidal added his second touchdown run to seal the game.
Recap:
-
Trey Lance: 120 yards, 2 TDs, 13/20 passing
-
Chargers Defense: 3 interceptions, multiple turnovers forced
-
Lions: 5 turnovers, no takeaways

Final Score: Chargers 34, Lions 7
A strong start for Harbaugh’s Chargers, and a promising performance from Lance — who’s hoping this third stop could be his breakthrough.
