2025 Preakness Stakes prize money, purse, payouts breakdown

2025 Preakness Stakes prize money, purse, payouts: What winner, top five horses share at second Triple Crown race.

After finishing second in the Kentucky Derby, Journalism took home first place at the Preakness Stakes. Journalism was the odds on favorite to win the race and snuck through at the very last moment to cross the finish line ahead of Gosger by a half-length. Journalism's jockey, Umberto Rispoli, became the first Italian to win a Triple Crown race.

The win also gave Journalism's trainer, Michael W. McCarthy, his second victory at the Preakness Stakes

This was the second time in the past four years the Derby winner opted out of the short two-week turnaround time between races, with Sovereignty joining Rich Strike in 2022.

How Much Does Journalism Win for First Place in the Preakness

This year's total prize purse is $2 million, the same as the 2024 total purse, which was the highest in the race's history. The first-place winner, Journalism, takes home $1.2 million of that $2 million total purse. Additionally, Journalism receives a replica of the Woodlawn Vase trophy, considered the "most valuable trophy in sports."

Preakness Stakes purse: winners payout, prize money for finishing position

The top five finishing positions at the Preakness Stakes earn a share of the total prize purse, but the winning horse takes a majority of the winnings. The winner of the Preakness Stakes earns 60 percent of the total purse, which is now up to $1.2 million. The runner-up will earn 20 percent of the purse, which amounts to $400,000. The remaining $400,000 is divided up between the third-, fourth- and fifth-place finishers.

First: Journalism -- $1.2 million

Second: Gosger -- $400,000

Third: Sandman -- $220,000

Fourth: Goal Oriented -- $120,000

Fifth: Heart of Honor -- $60,000

Preakness Stakes prize money: How much do jockeys and trainers take home?

Jockeys are typically hired as contractors per race rather than on a full-time basis. Although their contracts can vary, they typically earn a set amount upfront and a small share of any prize money.

Jockeys and trainers typically receive up to 10% of any winnings from the prize purse, while the owner of the horse takes home the remainder of the sum.

At the Preakness Stakes, the winning trainer and jockey are also given solid sterling silver cups that resemble the Woodlawn Vase trophy. Each cup is one foot tall and valued at $15,000.
