The 2025 edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup will begin on Saturday, October 11. The event is an under-21 field hockey tournament and this year it will feature eight teams, split into two groups. The top two teams from either pool will progress to the semifinals. The eight-day event, which concludes on October, is set to take place in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

This is the 12th edition of the tournament, with the first Sultan of Johor Cup taking place in 2011. Malaysia won the trophy that year, with India finishing fourth.

In the previous edition held last season, Great Britain clinched their record fourth Sultan of Johor Cup title after edging past Australia 3-2 in a thrilling final. With this victory, they became the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

How does the Sultan of Johor Cup works, format, teams, pools

Six nations – India, Great Britain, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia.

The 2025 Sultan of Johor Cup will be played in a round-robin format, where each of the six participating teams will face the other five once, resulting in five league-stage matches per team.

Based on points earned, the top two teams will qualify for the final to compete for the title, while the third and fourth-placed teams will contest for the bronze medal. Teams finishing fifth and sixth will play a classification match to determine their final positions.
