A stunning Japan came back from behind to beat Germany 2-1 in a big upset as Hansi Flick’s side suffer for the second straight World Cup opening defeat. .

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring on Penalty with opening lead for Germany after 30 minutes but substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano scored second-half goals to earn Japan a memorable victory at the Khalifa International Stadium.


Ilkay Gundogan of Manchester City had given Germany the lead from the penalty spot in the first half before Ritsu Doan of Japan, a substitute, tied the score in the 75th minute.

The goal was scored after a series of incredible saves at either end, including a double save by Japan's Shuichi Gonda to stop Serge Gnabry and Jonas Hofmann and a save by Germany's Manuel Neuer to stop Junya Ito.

When the score was 1-0, Germany, who placed last in their group in Russia in 2018, had several opportunities to increase their lead.

In Group E, they will face tough competition from 2010 group champions Spain on Sunday before playing Costa Rica in the group's final match.
