Kenya's Chepngetich, Kipruto wins the 2022 Chicago Marathon titles

Kenya's Duo Benson Kipruto & Ruth Chepngetich wins the 2022 Chicago Marathon men's & Women's titles.

Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich ran the second fastest women's marathon of all time to defend her women's title at the Chicago Marathon in a dominant display on Sunday, breaking the tape in two hours 14 minutes and 18 seconds, as her compatriot Benson Kipruto cruised to victory in the men's race in 2:04:24.

Kenya's Chepngetich took the lead right away and maintained world-record pace for the rest of the race before faltering toward the end to win in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 18 seconds.

It was only 14 seconds slower than the world record of 2:14:04 achieved in Chicago in 2019 by Kenyan Brigid Kosgei, but it was still the second-fastest time ever, surpassing Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain's 2:15:25 pace from 2003.

Vivian Kiplagat of Kenya finished third in 2:20:52, 43 seconds behind Emily Sisson in second place with a time that broke the previous American record established by Keira D'Amato in Houston in January.

In the men's race, Kipruto, who won the Boston Marathon in 2021, rallied late to win in 2:04:24, 25 seconds ahead of Seifu Tura of Ethiopia, the reigning champion, and John Korir of Kenya, who finished third in 2:05:01.

Seven years after his older brother Dickson Chumba won the race, the 2021 Boston Marathon champion hardly appeared weary as he crossed the finish line in sunny conditions. Tura Abdiwak came in second in 2:04:49, and Kenyan John Korir took third.

The men's wheelchair race was won by Paralympic champion Marcel Hug of Switzerland in a lightning-fast 1:25:20, which also gave him victories in Tokyo, Berlin, and London.

In the women's wheelchair race, American Susannah Scaroni defeated 2021 champion Tatyana McFadden in 1:45:48 to win her first significant marathon championship.
