The Idea for the MLB Home Run Derby was inspired by the 1960 TV show Home Run Derby that featured the likes of Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays.
The MLB Derby annual competition started in 1985 and was first nationally televised Live on ESPN in 1993, albeit on tape delay. The 1998 edition at Coors Field was the first one to be aired live on ESPN.

Parker won the inaugural Home Run Derby with six homers against four future Hall-of-Famers, including Jim Rice, Eddie Murray, Carlton Fisk and Ryne Sandberg.
Who has the Most MLB Home Run Derby wins?
Griffey remains the only player in MLB history to win three Home Run Derbies. Two of those came back-to-back in 1998 and 1999. The other was in 1994.
The only other multi-time winners are Prince Fielder, Yoenis Céspedes, and Pete Alonso.
- Alonso also owns the all-time record for most career home runs in the competition with 131.
Who won the MLB Home Run Derby 2024.?
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez edged Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. in the final, clubbing 14 homers to Witt's 13. Witt nearly tied things up in the bonus round when he sent a deep fly ball to left-center, but it clanked off the bottom of the wall for the final out.
That paved the way for Hernandez to become the first Dodgers player to win the event.
