Kontaveit crush Halep in Transylvania Open, First time WTA Finals qualify

Anett Kontaveit beats Simona Halep to win Transylvania Open, qualified for WTA Finals 2021.






 The No.2 seed Estonian secured a spot at the season-ending WTA Finals 2021 defeated No.1 seed and home favorite Simona Halep of Romania, 6-2, 6-3, to claim the singles title after a brisk 1 hour and 10 minutes of play. Kontaveit did not drop a set in the tournament.


 By claiming her fourth title of the season Overall FIFTH -  (which have all come in the last 10 weeks), Kontaveit clinches the last remaining spot in the Akron WTA Finals in Guadalajara, becoming the first player representing Estonia to make the year-ending championships.



The second-seeded Kontaveit didn’t drop a set in the tournament while winning her second straight title, after victory at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow last week.

Her strong finish to the season with 26 wins from her last 28 matches secured the eighth and final place at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, Mexico. She is the first player from Estonia to do so.


She will also enter the top 10 for the first time when the rankings are updated Monday.


Kontaveit had not won a set in three previous meetings with Halep, but denied the home crowd favorite a 23rd career title.

Kontaveit lost serve at 5-1 but broke back right away to take the opener.

 "I’m still unsure of what’s going on!" an excited Kontaveit said in her press conference. "Of course, I’m incredibly happy that I managed to play really well today and win the final. That was the main focus and I’m really, really proud of myself that I managed to do that." 


"I believe in myself a little bit more than I did a couple years ago, and I was trying to be aggressive but also stay consistent, and not go for too much," Kontaveit said, regarding her first win over Halep. "I think she is such a good player, and I really tried to just focus on myself and not think about the three times that I had lost to her. I just took it as a new challenge."
