Premier League clubs splurged approximately £1.4billion on 99 permanent signings over the summer.

The sum total eclipses last year’s spend by £158m.

The £1billion threshold has now been broken for the fourth year running.

Manchester United were the biggest Premier League spenders this summer with their £148m outlay and Harry Maguire was the most expensive acquisition at £80m.

Newly-promoted Aston Villa is a shock second behind the Red Devils, splashing out £144.5m on 12 players.

Norwich is the Premier League’s lowest spenders, outlaying just £1.1m.
