The 152nd Kentucky Derby Horse Race is in the Books.
Golden Tempo (23-1) made history at the 152nd Kentucky Derby, as the 19 horse pulled off an improbable stretch run from the outside to edge out co-favorite Renegade (5-1) at the finish line and make Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer to have a horse win the Run for the Roses.
The annual Grade I stakes race, the "Run for the Roses," has long been the biggest showcase of American horse racing. It's the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred events, and it has built a reputation not only as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" but as a stomping ground of celebrity guests.
The 2026 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky arrived. The Final 19 horse field competed for the prestigious garland of roses with Sovereignty taking the top prize. The day also saw a 14-race undercard lineup, headlined by the Kentucky Derby, completing the festivities.
Who won the 2026 Kentucky Derby?
Golden Tempo won the 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday, which was run with 18 horses after The Puma was scratched with a swollen leg, and Great White fell before the race.
Golden Tempo is trained by Cherie DeVaux, who is the first female trainer to win the “Run for the Roses.” DeVaux is the second female trainer to win any Triple Crown race. Jena Antonucci won the 2023 Belmont Stakes with Arcangelo.
The victory was also the first for jockey Jose Ortiz, who won the Derby in his 11th try.
Renegade, a co-favorite and ridden by Ortiz's brother Irad, finished second, and Ocelli, a 70-1 longshot, placed third.
Six Speed took off from the No. 17 post, which has never won the Derby, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and was in the lead coming down the backstretch. But Golden Tempo came on strong, literally passing every other horse, coming from being dead last at one point.
The Puma was the fifth horse to be scratched this week, following Silent Tactic, Fulleffort, and Right to Party. Those horses were replaced by Ocelli, Robusta, and Great White, who also scratched after falling on their sides before being placed in the starting gate.
LAST YEAR: Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado entered their names in the horse racing history books after winning the 151st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3.
