LUKE LITTLER will be desperate to retain the stunning World Darts Championship trophy – and the pay cheque that comes with it isn’t bad either.

The teen sensation tore apart Dutch superstar Michael van Gerwen to lift the 2024/25 title.

And not only did Littler become the youngest ever champion, he also banked a mouthwatering £500,000 Prize pool for his achievement.

But for the world No1 to reign supreme in Ally Pally once again, he’ll have to be the best of an expanded 128-player field.

However, Littler is a nailed-on favourite to retain his crown and earn more prize money, having recently completed the TV darts trophy haul.

How World Darts Championship prize  money grown over the years.

After the split in darts, the first PDC World Darts Championship was won in 1994 by Dennis Priestley, who claimed a £16,000 top prize for beating Phil Taylor at the iconic Circus Tavern.

The top prize dropped the following year to just £12,000, won by Taylor, and fluctuated in years to come, but eventually grew to £100,000 in 2006.

There have been substantial leaps since then, jumping to £200,000 in 2010, £300,000 in 2016 and growing to £500,000 in 2019.

In the current edition of Darts championship winner set to earn double prize money amount than Littler scooped for his victory A-YEAR Ago.

Before the PDC (formerly WDC) came into existence, the BDO World Championship crowned the undisputed world champion, starting in 1978 when Leighton Rees won £3,000 for his triumph.

The 1993 BDO World Championship, the last before the split, saw John Lowe win £30,000 thanks to beating Alan Warriner in the final at Lakeside.

After seven years of writing a £500,000 winner's cheque, the PDC has doubled the incentive for victory this time around. It's a figure that would have been unfathomable for the 24 players who competed for the £16,000 prize in the inaugural 1994 event at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet, Essex.
