CHESTER, Pa. — The Philadelphia Union are back on top of Major League Soccer.
Mikael Uhre’s first-half strike and another strong performance from goalkeeper Andre Blake gave the Union a 1-0 win over New York City FC on Saturday night — securing both the Eastern Conference title and the Supporters’ Shield for the league’s best overall record.
Uhre broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, slotting home a pass from Jovan Lukic. It was Uhre’s sixth goal of the season and Lukic’s fourth assist in his first MLS campaign.
At the other end, Blake was rock solid again, making two key saves to preserve his ninth shutout of the season — and the 89th of his career, all with Philadelphia. The veteran keeper also helped the Union capture the Shield back in 2020.
Philadelphia improved to 20-7-6, winning five of their last six matches. Under first-year head coach Bradley Carnell, the Union are back in the playoffs as the No. 1 seed after missing out last year for the first time since 2017. They’ve also been the league’s toughest defense, allowing just 33 goals all season — fewest in MLS.
NYCFC’s goalkeeper Matt Freese made four saves to keep his side in the game, but the visitors couldn’t find an equalizer. The loss keeps NYCFC (17-11-5) stuck in a tight race for playoff seeding with Charlotte and Inter Miami, both also on 56 points. Miami, however, has a game in hand.
Who won the last MLS Supporter's Shield?
Inter Miami CF have won their first-ever Supporters' Shield 2024, as the Miami forward Lionel Messi scored twice in 3-2 victory at the Columbus Crew guaranteeing Lionel Messi & Co. will finish 2024 atop the regular-season standings.
