Japan buried Matildas’ dreams alive Wins 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup title

AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 Final: Japan beats Australia 1-0 to lift title for third time despite Matildas best efforts.

Japan crushed Australia’s hopes of AFC Women’s Asian Cup title glory, edging the Matildas 1–0 in a tense final  in front of a tournament record crowd of 74,397 at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Despite a spirited performance on home soil, the hosts were once again left agonisingly short on the big stage, with what may have been the final opportunity for this core group to secure a major title together slipping away.

The decisive moment came early, as 21-year-old Maika Hamano delivered a stunning long-range strike in the 17th minute.

Given too much space outside the box, she unleashed a powerful angled effort that caught goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold off guard, proving to be the difference in an otherwise tightly contested match.

Japan’s control throughout the tournament made their triumph unsurprising, but Australia had their chances to rewrite the script.

Fun Fact:

Australia had more shots, and more shots on goal, than all other opposition teams Japan played this tournament combined. *Not fun, I'm sobbing.

Caitlin Foord endured a frustrating night, missing several key opportunities, including a clear early chance set up by Mary Fowler and another just before halftime.

Captain Sam Kerr, still managing a knee issue, struggled to impose herself, while a late header from Alanna Kennedy offered a glimmer of hope that ultimately faded. As Japan held firm, the final whistle confirmed heartbreak for the Matildas, who were left to reflect on missed moments and what might have been.

STATS:
There was A repeat of the 2023 World Cup’s semi-final heartbreak with the Matildas to play for their first major trophy under coach Joe Montemurro.

It is the fifth Asian Cup final for Australia. They beat North Korea on penalties in 2010, while losing to China in 2006, and to Japan in 2014, 2018 now in 2026 on Home Soil too..
