Kenyan world-record holder Eliud Kipchoge has won the Berlin Marathon for a record fifth time, crossing the line in 2hr 02min 42sec in the German capital on Sunday.

As Kipchoge crossed the finish line, women's leader Tigist Assefa was three minutes ahead of the previous world record of 2:14:04, keeping her on track to smash the mark for his 16th career marathon.

Kipchoge's fifth win takes him past Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie's four victories.

Kipochoge broke the world record last year in Berlin but was off the pace on Sunday, September 24. His compatriot Vincent Kipkemboi, who is making his marathon debut finished second in 2:03.13. Ethiopia's Tadese Takele finished third in 2:03.24.

2019 world bronze medalist Amos Kipruto finished fourth

Kipchoge now becomes the first runner to have won the Berlin Marathon five times.

He is the current holder of the marathon world record, which he had set with a finish time of 2:01:09.

Ahead of the race, Kipchoge stated that his main goal is to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals and that he believes running in Berlin is the best way to prepare for this.

Kipchoge claimed his first individual world championship title in 2003 by winning the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships and setting a world junior record over 5000 m on the track.

At the age of eighteen, he became the senior 5000 m world champion at the 2003 World Championships with a championship record, then followed by an Olympic bronze for Kenya in 2004 and a bronze at the 2006 World Indoor Championships.

A five-time World Championship 5000m finalist, Kipchoge took silver medals at the 2007 World Championships, 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 Commonwealth Games.
