Ramos Hit Hat-Trick Portugal thrashed Swiss into Quarters

FIFA World Cup 2022: Goncalo Ramos make hat-trick as Portugal beat Switzerland 6-1 in Last 16 match, reached quarter-finals, player ratings.

  • Portugal had no regrets over dropping Cristiano Ronaldo as his replacement Goncalo Ramos scored a first word cup hat-trick in a superb 6-1 win over Switzerland in the World Cup last 16 to reach quarter-finals.

The build-up to the knockout match was dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction to being benched in Portugal's previous match. His relegation ended a run of 31 games he had started for his country at tournament finals.

His countrymen dispelled any drama surrounding his absence with one of their best performances of the competition thus far, helping Portugal advance to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2006, where Morocco, who defeated Spain, awaits.

When Ronaldo scored his first World Cup goal, he was five years old. Ramos, who took his place, needed just 17 minutes to score his first World Cup goal, a thunderous effort that went past Yann Sommer before he could react.

Before the half, Portugal increased their lead when Pepe, 39, scored from a corner to become the second-oldest World Cup scorer ever. Ramos then put an end to the match with a poacher's finish at the near post.

Just before the hour, even left-back Raphael Guerreiro participated, rifling home an inviting Ramos assist, before Manuel Akanji stabbed home a consolation that hardly called for a celebration.
