The World Cup is an eight-round knockout tournament. Each match consists of two classical games. If players are tied, they return on the third day for rapid and blitz tiebreakers. The top 50 seeds skip the opening round, while the remaining players begin from Round 1.

The last edition in 2023 was won by Magnus Carlsen. Before him came Jan-Krzysztof Duda (2021), Teimour Radjabov (2019) and goes back to Levon Aronian in 2005.
