Washington Capitals Legend Alex Ovechkin Scores 900th Career Goal Against the Blues.
Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin became the first NHL player in history to reach 900 career regular-season goals on Wednesday, Nov. 5, during a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Ovechkin scored in the second period, backhanding the puck into a wide-open net after intercepting a clearing attempt by Blues goalie Jordan Binnington. The goal ultimately proved to be the game-winner.
“It’s a huge number and no one ever did it in NHL history,” Ovechkin said. Teammates celebrated on the ice, and Capitals owner Ted Leonsis called him “a generational talent and the heartbeat of DC hockey.”
The 40-year-old had previously passed Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894 goals in April 2025 and needed just three goals this season to hit 900. He reached the milestone in his 1,504th career game, despite a slow start due to an injury-limited training camp.
A pregame ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 26 to honor Ovechkin’s 900 goals and 1,500 games. Beyond regular-season goals, Ovechkin is closing in on Gretzky’s record for combined goals in the regular season and playoffs (Gretzky: 1,016; Ovechkin: 977).
