Walmart heirs complete $4.65B deal to buy NFL Denver Broncos

Walmart heirs Walton & others completes $4.65B in record-settling deal to purchase the Denver Broncos franchise.

  • The Broncos announced late Tuesday night they had entered into a sale agreement with the Walton-Penner group led by their heirs, Rob Walton & others, to purchase the Denver Broncos in the most expensive deal for a sports franchise in the world.

The offer was worth of $4.65 billion.

The NFL must approve the contract for the Walmart-Penner group to purchase the franchise from the Pat Bowlen Trust, but that is only a formality.

  • When the New Jersey Nets were purchased for $2.35 billion in August 2019, CBSSports.com reports that the price was the most ever paid for a sports team in the United States.

  • As of 2018, when David Tepper purchased the Carolina Panthers for $2.275 billion, the cost of the most expensive NFL club ever sold was $4.65 billion, which is more than twice that amount.

Walton's net worth would surpass that of the NFL's top six owners combined, making him the Top NFL richest owners right away, 2022. Tepper has the most money of the league's current owners, at $16.7 billion.

According to Reuters, Rob Walton would become the second member of the Walton family to buy an NFL team. Stan Kroenke, the owner of the Los Angeles Rams, is married to his cousin Ann Walton Kroenke.
