The first Australian Open women's singles were held in 1922 alongside the women's and mixed doubles as the last three events to be included.
The Australian Open is played during the two weeks mid-January and has been sequentially the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the tennis season since 1987.

The Australian Open was not held from 1940-45 due to World War II, and 1986 because Tennis Australia needed to move the competition start from mid-December 1986 to mid-January 1987.
